Air Force Staff Sgt. Daniel N. Fannin, 30, a native of Morehead, Kentucky, and a 12-year veteran of the Air Force, assigned to 552nd Operations Support Squadron, Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, died April 27, 2013, in the crash of an MC-12 aircraft in Afghanistan. He was an airborne sensor operator and a qualified Air Force air surveillance instructor who had served with distinction. Sgt. Fannin also had worked as an air surveillance technician aboard the Air Force's highly sophisticated E-3 AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft. Among his honors are the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf Cluster and the Air Force Achievement Medal with oak leaf cluster. Born April 9, 1983, in Rowan County, Kentucky, he is survived by his wife, Sonya, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, his mother, Sharri Hamm Jones of Morehead, Kentucky; grandparents, Henry and Fern Hamm of Morehead, Kentucky; other relatives and friends. Family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013, at the Morehead First Church of God, 576 Sunset Lane, Morehead, with a memorial service immediately following at 7 p.m. Interment will take place in Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Morehead American Legion Post 126 Building Fund, Post Office Box 58, Morehead, KY 40351.
