WILLIAM DORSEY LYKINS, 91, of Shelby, passed away Sunday evening, February 16, 2014 at Crestwood Care Center.

He was born August 15, 1922 in Olive Hill, Kentucky to the late James Isaiah Lykins and Gertrude Susan (Caudill) Lykins.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. Dorsey was a hard worker and was formerly employed at Ohio Brass then the Ohio State Reformatory, from which he retired. He played guitar-or at least tried very hard- and enjoyed listening to Gospel music especially the Gaithers and Spencers. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling and always appreciated looking at nice cars.

He took great care of his family-meeting all their needs and most of their wants. Dorsey was always there whenever help was needed and was always willing to direct you in the right way to take care of things. Spending time with his children and grandchildren were at the top of his list.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Lykins; two sons, Roger (Karen) Lykins of Loudonville and Carl (Cheryl) Lykins of Shelby; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Garnet Mabry of Grayson, Kentucky and Margie Winkleman of Mansfield; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 59 years, Madeline (Butler) Lykins; two daughters, Reva Fields and Deloris Jean Lykins; a son, William M. Lykins; three brothers, Jerry, Jack and Leroy Lykins; and three sisters, Thelma Shears, Jewell Burchett and Shirley Ann Lykins.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Road with Rev. Clifford Earl Tackett officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 p.m. Burial in Mansfield Memorial Park will follow the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
