MUNCIE--Sandra Kay Welches, 62, of Muncie, known to her family, friends, and the Muncie community as "The Cake Lady", passed away Thursday morning at The Waters of Muncie, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on August 29, 1948, to Charles and Jewel (Heflin) Dodson. She owned her own bakery, Heavenly Cakes, and also worked as a cake decorator for many years at Ross Supermarket. Most recently, she worked in the Southside High School cafeteria. She was a three time award winning gingerbread house and cake baker through Better Homes & Gardens. During her life, she has done cakes for hundreds of weddings, birthdays, and other special occastions. She was an avid sports fan and donated baked goods for many events to raise money for student athletes and Relay for Life. She is survived by her three sons, Chris Whittenburg of Texas, Paul Welches (wife-Lynn) of Indiana, and Andy Welches of California; a sister, Carolyn Mobley (husband-Ron) of California; a brother, Charles "Sonny" Dodson (wife-Ada); five granddaughters, Eryn Cool, Adrian Welches, Kayla Whittenburg, and Amie and Jamie Welches; three great-grandchilren, Landyn Cool, Miracle Jackson, and Kayden Vance; two nieces, Melody Perry and Jada Dodson; and special friends, Blair, Tyronda and Christine. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Destiny Christian Center, 5000 E. Centennial Ave., Muncie, IN, with Pastor Keith O'Neal and W.C. Edwards officiating. Burial will follow at Beech Grove Cemetery. Friends and family may visit at the church from 11 am. to 1 p.m. until services on Saturday. The family would like to thank the American Cancer Society, staff at Waters of Muncie, and all 5th floor medical staff at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital for their kindness over the past several months. A memorial fund had been set up for Sandy at WGE Federal Credity Union, 3230 S. Madison St., Muncie, In 48302 and all proceeds will benefil the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life.
