Eliza E. Ham was the daughter of Griffin and Mary Hamm (her mothers name was Betsy Ann Pond not Mary)and born in Madison county, KY March 6, 1836. She was married on March 23, 1858 (this date is not correct-- it should be November 23, 1858 I have marriage license) to John T. Alexander, the union resulting in the birth of two daughters, one of whom died at an early age. Her husband departed this life April 29,(this date is not correct it was April 27th when the Sultana exploded) 1865. On April 19, 1866, she was married to John C. Doty, by whom she bore three children, two sons and one daughter who, with the husband survived her whose death occurred November 27, 1893(i don't believe that the first son was her's since he was born in 1865 and that is when John's first wife died). The deceased came to this state in 1858 and to this county in 1881. She was a member of the Christian church since her 17th year and her life was consistent with her professions. The funeral occurred at Center church east of the city on Tuesday and was conducted by Rev. L. H. Hurt.

Her first marriage was to John T. Alexander on November 23, 1858 and he died April 27, 1865 after being held prisoner from the Civil War at Andersonville and was on the ill-fated boat the Sultana. The Sultana left Vicksburg and was having boiler problems when they got the Memphis after a couple of hours of working on the boilers they headed north to Cario, IL and Madison, IN when it exploded killing almost everyone on board. The ship was intended to hold 340 people and it was loaded with around 2,400 people. They were parents of two daughters Mary Alice who died in 1863 and Lucy Jane "Jenny" Alexander.

Her second marriage was to John C. Doty, April 19, 1866 and she died on November 27, 1893. They were the parents of one son Herschel and one daughter Ella.

She was a member of the Christian church.
