Notes for Herbert Daniel Hamm

Hamm, Herbert Daniel 'H.D.', died suddenly on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 in Hollywood, FL at the age of 62. H.D. was born to Herbert Hamm and Frances L. Steele Hamm in Lexington, KY on December 20, 1944.

He was a member of Arlington Christian Church.

H.D. participated in Boy Scouts and attended Bryan Station High School until he followed his grandfather, father and uncles into the horse racing industry. He won his first race as a sixteen year old jockey on June 5, 1961.

He was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army stationed at the Panama Canal. After his Army discharge, he resumed his career in the horse racing industry. He was an assistant starter to: Charlie Kmac, Bob Vaughn and Jesse Powell. H.D. considered the gate crew and Dick Buskey as his Florida family.

He had been residing with his special uncle, Allen Steele for the last fifteen years.

He is survived by both of his parents and his sister, Brenda (Raymond) Spring. As well, he leaves behind much loved family: Herbbie (Michele) Bannister, Lynda (Erin) O'Daniel, Teresa (Jeff) Fields, Casey (Jeff) Kaucher and Susan Spring.

H.D. was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Doris Bannister.

No visitation will be held. H.D.'s remains will be interred in the family plot at Lexington Cemetery, where a graveside service will be celebrated on Saturday, November 17, 2007 at 10:00 A.M., by Evan Meyers.
