Nellie Hamm Moneypenny

Nellie Frances Hamm Moneypenny, 68, of Martinsburg, W. Va., passed away Nov. 28, 2005, at her home after an 11-year battle with a rare neurological disease.

Born July 15, 1937, at Mt. Carmel, she was the daughter of Frank Harlan and Amedia Inez Riley Hamm.

Mrs. Moneypenny attended school at Mt. Carmel and graduated from Fleming County High School in 1955. She served in the U.S. Army Women?s Army Corps from 1955-1958 and was stationed at Fort McClellan, Ala., and Fort Myer, Va. She rose to the rank of Specialist E5 in her three-year enlistment while working at the U.S. Army Visual Information Center, the Pentagon.

Following her military enlistment, she worked at the Army Map Service, Arlington Hall Station and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration where she served as secretary to Neil Armstrong at various times. She worked with the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke of NIH, which ironically was one of the few to study the rare disease from which she suffered. She was a charter member of Women in Military and an early contributor to their memorial.

Mrs. Moneypenny was of the Protestant faith and active in women's ministries, youth work, Sunday school, music and other activities of the church.

Surviving are her husband, James E. Moneypenny whom she married in 1974; one daughter, Tonya (Joe) Cherry of Mt. Airy, Md.; one son, Brian Moneypenny of Martinsburg; twin grandchildren, Hannah Lynn and Jesse Wayne Cherry of Mt. Airy; one brother, Cecil V. (Judy) Hamm of David; a sister-in-law, Gloria Hamm of Los Angeles; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death was one brother, Harlan Hamm Jr.

Funeral services were conducted Dec. 6 at the Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. Burial was at Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg.
