Michael Harold “Mike” Helterbrand, age 62, of U.S. 60 West, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012, at the V. A. Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Born January 2, 1950, in Muses Mills, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Clyde Bruce Helterbrand and Barbara James Compton Helterbrand. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, David Helterbrand.

Mike is survived by his companion, Karen Hatfield; his three children, Michael Wade (Lisa) Helterbrand of Beattyville, Kentucky, Gabriel Darin (Tiffanie) Helterbrand and Shannon Leigh Helterbrand, all of Morehead, Kentucky; Cathy Helterbrand-Owens, the mother of his children; eight grandchildren; and one grandchild expected on August 22.

Other survivors include five brothers, Timothy (Carol) Helterbrand of Morehead, Kentucky, Mark (Dixie) Helterbrand, Nicholas (Teresa) Helterbrand, Jonathan Helterbrand and Joseph (Melissa) Helterbrand, all of Muses Mills, Kentucky; three sisters, Deborah (David) Martinat of Morehead, Kentucky, Rebekah (Harold) Montgomery and Rachel Lashbrooke, all of Muses Mills, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Marsha Helterbrand of Muses Mills, Kentucky; nieces and nephews; other family; and many friends.

Mike served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1969 until 1971 and was the owner and operator of Mike’s Transmission in Farmers, Kentucky, for 40 years. He loved reading, working in the garden, and riding his motorcycle. Mike attended Slaty Point Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, January 23, 2012, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Rev. Rusty Hedrick officiating. Burial will follow in Muses Mills Cemetery with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.

Pallbearers will be Timothy Helterbrand, Mark Helterbrand, Nicholas Helterbrand, Jonathan Helterbrand, Joseph Helterbrand, Donald Phillips, and Michael Wade Helterbrand.

Visitation is after 6 p.m . Sunday, January 22, 2012, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.
