Vernon Johnson, 87, of Hillsboro, passed away Sunday, October 19, 2014 at the Hospice of Hope Care Center in Maysville. He was born September 26, 1927 in Bath County to the late William Thomas Johnson and Rozennia Caudill Johnson. Vernon attended Fleming County High School until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945 to proudly serve his country in occupied Japan during WWII. A lifelong farmer, Vernon never accepted retirement, as he enjoyed life on the Johnson Farm with his surviving wife of 66 years, Helen Jackson Johnson. They were married February 28, 1948. Vernon's love and devotion for his wife and family extended to the faith and commitment he had for his Lord Jesus Christ and the Hillsboro Christian Church. As a member for 63 years, Vernon served as youth leader, Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, and Elder, as well as church board member. Active in the community, Vernon also served on the Fleming County Board of Education for 10 years. He was a longstanding member with The Gideons International, American Legion, Modern Woodmen of the World, and Farm Bureau. Besides his wife and K-9 companion "Bo", Vernon is survived by a son, Larry V. Johnson of Flemingsburg; two grandchildren, Rhonda Clark (Ashley Black) of Flemingsburg, and Matthew (Stacey) Klug of Cincinnati, OH; five great-grandchildren, Lee (Jennifer) Sutton of Columbia, KY, Ryan (Keelia) Reed of Hillsboro, Ava, Wyatt, and Ryder Klug of Cincinnati; two brothers, Tommy (Marge) Johnson of Hobart, IN, and Billy (Lou Ellen) Johnson of Flemingsburg; and a sister, Clarice (Jim) Wiley of Anderson, IN. Besides his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Johnson Price; four sisters, Eve Bowers, Ethel Binion, Nellie Eldridge, and Oma Faye Vice; and three brothers, Ellis Johnson, Keenis Johnson, and Ivan Johnson. Funeral services will be 1:00 pm Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Hillsboro Christian Church officiated by the Rev. Jim Hamm. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Friday, October 24th at the Carpenter-Fritz & Vice Funeral Home and from 8:00 am until the hour of service Saturday, October 25th at the Hillsboro Christian Church. Burial will be in Hillsboro Cemetery with Military Honors performed by the W.N. Fant American Legion Post #5 and Franklin Sousley VFW Post #1834. Pallbearers will be Lee Sutton, Ryan Reed, Matt Klug, Ashley Black, Todd Johnson, and Roland Rawlings.
