My memories of my grandmother, Alice Swim Maupin are precious.I did not get to see her very often as there were 6 children in our family and because we lived in North Carolina and she lived in OHIO.My mother, Ida Loretta Maupin Bates visited as often as possible.I remember my grandmother and mother would cry when we left. My grandmother would stand in the driveway at my Aunt Annie's home in Youngstown, Ohio until my father, John Thomas Bates would drive away. My mother would be very quiet on the way home.Grandmother would always have on a loose fitting cotton muted colored "frock" with a sash-type belt or ribbon-type one strand string-like belt and was usually barefoot in the summer visits.I remember we didn't talk much but we sat together on the large front porch and it was so good to be with her.Joyce Bates Dixon
